Administration and Planning Core
The goal of the Administrative and Planning Core is to provide overall vision, administration, and management of the Center. A prime objective is to recruit other investigators and partners throughout the region, to increase collaboration and leverage resources to address the health and safety needs .Research Core
The current projects in the Core include:1. Prospective Study of Occupational Lung Disease and Endotoxin Exposure in Naive (New) Dairy Workers
2. GC/MS Analysis of Bacterial Endotoxin Compositions and Potency in Agricultural Dusts
Completed Research Projects
Prevention Core
The Prevention and Intervention Core has assembled a cross-disciplinary group of investigators to address the critical issues in agricultural safety and health that are specific to the High Plains Intermountain Region ( Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah). Within the Core are investigators with backgrounds in engineering, epidemiology, ergonomics, animal science, and industrial hygiene. The most prevalent causes of injury and illness on ranches and farms are related to the interaction of humans with animals and equipment. The project in the Core involve the development and testing of promising approaches to preventing injuries associated with work in dairy parlors.
Current Core Projects:
1. Injury Risk Analysis in Large-Herd Dairy Parlors
Outreach / Education Core
The overall goal of the Education and Outreach Core is to develop, implement, and evaluate applied health and safety programs that prevent agricultural injuries and disease. Collaboration with scientists within HICAHS and other NIOSH/CDC sponsored Agricultural Centers will enhance efforts to translate research in to practice.
Current Core Projects:
1. Enhancing Translation and Dissemination Through Agricultural Partnership
2. Developing and Testing Interactive CD Health and Safety Curricula for 4-H Youth
Completed Outreach / Education Projects
Evaluation
Within HICAHS, project staff provide information containing project descriptions and activities (indicator data) on their projects for entry into an ACCESS database used by the ACE team. The information enables the Administrative team to report on progress on project objectives (accountability); and to identify the types of activities the Center undertakes, products developed and for whom services are provided (monitoring). The information assists in program improvement and strategic planning (process evaluation). It also provides the data necessary from HICAHS for the Agricultural Center Evaluation project, which reports on the Agricultural Center Initiative as a whole.
