Today there are many youth living and working on farms and ranches. Because agriculture is one of the most dangerous occupational environments in the U.S., statistics show there are increased injuries and fatalities each year to these youth. There is an urgent need to decrease this phenomenon. A project is underway to develop an interactive agricultural health/safety CD to help youth expand their knowledge about real and potential environmental and occupational hazards. This is a 3-year research-based project that targets 4-H youth (app. 8-12 yr. old). Development of the project will be by a team including 4-H youth, 4-H leaders and Cooperative Extension Agents, HICAHS personnel, and the CSU State 4-H leader. Livestock handling, tractor safety and grain handling/storage are some of the interest areas. This project will continuously be revised and evaluated and serve as an educational tool for 4-H youth and other youth programs.
