Agricultural Curriculum Evaluation
Principal Investigator: Bob Seiz, School of Social Work, Colorado State University
A CD based agricultural health / safety educational program curriculum has been developed for youth between the ages of 15-17 years of age and is being taught in rural Colorado and Wyoming high school agriculture classes. The technology-driven curriculum was based upon the developmental stage of the 15-17 year old students and a needs assessment of agricultural educators in the two states. It provides information on hazard and safety issues involved in the use of tractors, ATV's, and garden machinery; the handling of horses, livestock, agricultural chemicals and volatile organic compounds; being around stored grain, organic dusts, electrical conduits and power lines; and emergency rescue. A 5-year study was undertaken to evaluate changes in student's knowledge, attitudes and safety behavior due to the inclusion of this innovative CD-based curriculum into existing school curricula and to track changes in incidences of agriculture-related injuries and illnesses. The study also utilizes family interviews with random-assignment to study and standard curriculum groups.
